Veteran's Day Poem

Wow, I haven't blogged since June.  Probably because I really haven't gotten past Sick and Crabby. But today I share a poem I've written.  I apologize as Blogger probably won't keep my spacing and indentations.

I am responsible for the Daily Reflections at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital that show up on our intranet and as an email "sent out" by the CEO.  I searched for way too long yesterday for something for Veteran's Day.  Unsatisfied, I wrote this to post.  Perhaps others will find some positive qualities about it.  Thank you especially, big brothers Pete and Nick.

Veteran's Day Poem by Magdalyn Sebastian, November 10, 2012.

Old men in faded uniforms that strain at their buttons,
marching proudly in scattered formation down Main Streets
and gathering at VFW’s to share with comrades,
silently or in whispered story
what they cannot share with anyone else.

Young women in camouflage pants and dust colored T-shirts,
remembering home and sweet hearts and
what life used to be before they were deployed,
stationed in a land as different from home
as any could imagine, only hotter.

A newly elected Congresswoman,
in stylish skirt and beaming smile,
marching across a stage
on prosthetic legs and feet.
Proudly served, proudly serving.

Men who left home as boys
who most often worried about
X-boxes and girls
or how to stay away from gangs and drugs.
Now different, never the same and yet the same.

For every generation of warriors
we remember the valor and willingness
to serve in ways we would not.
We pray to remember as well
to honor each one who took the uniform
with passionate work for peace.

She Cried For Them

She cried for them
Standing over the man that had raised her, grandfather being father
Thin and wasted, covered in a brightly pieced donated quilt.
His grey curls she tenderly caressed
Still and motionless in his rest.

She cried for them
The wife that faced the wall
Projecting composure where there was none
Now she reigned alone over her family kingdom
Her tears shed silently, veiled

She cried for them
The brother looking so much like his brother
Lean and gaunt, graying hair and wrinkled mask
Standing strong and mute beside the bed
Shallow breaths concealing unbidden emotion

She cried for them
For those that gathered and those at home
For nurses and doctors who gave everything
Head resting on his chest with unabashed sobs
She cried for them

She cried for them
When they could not
She cried for them
When they did not know how
She cried for them
And so they gave her license
For wails and moans and garbled love song.

Mary

Radiant, poised.
Mother taught her.
Faith questioned.
Faith sustained.
Classic suits.
Grey hair cropped and coiffed.
Dignity of presence.
Dignity of soul.
Head held high.
Smile greeting, genuine.
Unflinchingly elegant.
Unflinchingly determined.
While those she loves
see painful movements
and note tears
quickly brushed away,
She perseveres,
in control, in command.
Treatments will not dictate life.
Doctors will not determine fate.
Laughter still peals
crisp, spontaneous.
Bedevilment and wisdom
dance and embrace.
Joy exudes through
decades of being.
Looking back contentedly.
Looking forward expectantly.

Beckett

Nestled in loving arms
He looked into her eyes.
Deeply
Urgently
Passionately.

Here was a face, a voice
He knew better than his own.
More
More
For the journey.

Another face comes into view
In this face love and sorrow combine.
Both searching
Memorizing
Blessing.

He understood the play between them
And himself - each actor’s role.
Promise
Unending
Love.

And so the parents nuzzled their infant
Telling him good-bye
Breath
Slow
Shallow.

He tried to drink them into his soul
To know their who and their why
Time
Fleeting
Gathering

They traced his face with trembling fingers
Washing him with their tears
Attached
Detached
Eternal.

In eight days
A whole life lived
Hello and good-bye
Overwhelming
Mystical

And when he was filled
He closed his eyes
Silent
Fulfilled
Immortal.
